Gallery Laugarvatn

On my summervacation I rented a summerhouse close to the Golden Circle of Iceland. The biggest tourist area in Iceland. The mesmerizing Gullfoss waterfall and the hot springs of Geysir and the ancient site of the oldest parliament in the world. Þingvellir or Thingvellir. Also known for being the rupture zone of the tectonic plates that seperate the USA and Europe. Google it if you want more...we are here to talk about coffee.
After being a local tourist for a few days I stumbled into a place I have been to before, many years ago. Gallery Laugarvatn. It is in the small town of Laugarvatn close to Geysir. It used to be one of few places that sold local arts in the rural area for a long time, before the tourist explosion that has taken over Iceland.

Now they run a small art gallery, a guesthouse and a coffee shop. Most places around you can get coffee, but they are mostly classified as restaurants. This one on the other hand is a bonafide coffee house.
I like the coffee they serve, at the moment they have Cafe Noire, something one can buy in local supermarkets, but it is a good brand, I at least like the flavour and feeling.

The place offers a few types of cake, but mostly rely on their boiled bread. Dark bread cooked in bags in the hot springs at Geysir. A local tradition and the bread is fantastic with almost any topping. One can buy this bread in supermarkets, but in this place they make their own, and cook in the natural hot springs themselves.
As a good tourist I just had chocolate cake :/ and coffee. The cake was actually very good.
The price for the cake was 650 kr or around 5 euros, and the coffee added up to 1000 kr or just under 8 euros. That is half the price of the local Reykjavik places. This is what a cake and coffee should cost. Not the overly priced store bought crap that is sold in many places in Reykjavik. Homemade cake and a good coffee for a good price.

The owner and his wife are very nice and know a lot about the area. Had a good chat with them. Part of the experience.

The scenery around this place is awesome, natural beauty all around. Trees, lakes, many greenhouses in the local small towns, that sell all kinds of vegatables to strawberries, and the best and most awesome blackberries I have ever tasted.

The Gallery is a nice place to sit down to, they have breakfast for the guesthouse and just for everyone who pops in from the street, good coffee, and are currently playing The Eagles Greatest hits. Nice mellow atmosphere, a good cup and a place I will come to when I drive through Laugarvatn in the future.
